Jamie Deen

Lady & Sons Restaurant
Savannah, GA

On our roadtrip to Beaufort, SC,
we stopped in Savannah specifically to grab lunch at Lady & Sons,
which is owned by Paula Deen (Food Network star).
I was dying to try her Fried Green Tomatos
and Crabcake Sandwich,
but we only had one hour parking,
and the wait was very long,
I was more than a little crushed,
so I said "I'll just buy something from her shop
next door instead."

But I got something better than a crabcake...
Jamie Deen, Paula's son was there!!!
Both brothers, Jamie and Bobbie regularly appear on her show,
which led to them becoming hosts of their own show.
So I purchased a book,
which happened to be signed by Paula,
and Jamie signed it as well.
He was so sweet, his momma raised him right with that Southern Charm.
He posed for a picture with me, and even signed a postcard for my grandmother
who loves to watch Paula
and has agreed for years that Jamie is easy on the eyes.

That make two Food Network stars for me this spring!!
(If you missed the Giada De Laurentiis book signing read again HERE.)

Have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!!!

Good Eats Wednesday

Irish Soda Bread

A marvelously easy bread,
which makes you feel as if you are visitng the country for holiday!

The baking soda makes this bread rise, so no waiting around for yeast.
The texture is similar to that of a biscuit...
I added raisins and caraway seeds... an acquired taste.
But topping a slice with some fresh butter and
slice of bacon or country ham for a hearty breakfast
is quite divine.

Bon appetite!

Letters to Juliet

Letters to Juliet is a must-see for anyone who loves travel romantic comedies, aspires to be a writer, loves gastronomie, or has a passion for Italy. There was beautiful scenery, a restaurant with fresh made pasta drying on the rack, love letters, Italian villas, and nice eye candy. The movie was far better than I expected, and my boyfriend even enjoyed it. It was me all in a wrap... and I know many ladies in blog land would surely love it.

On a similar note, I have been working on a few of my own writing goals lately and have even pitched my book to two agents in New York, so keep your fingers crossed.

As far as Italy goes, I've found quite a few websites with great international real estate. I found a charming little gem in Abruzzo that needs renovation for cheap! No I didn't buy it... but just letting my HGTV and travel lovers out there know there are some great deals for those who love that kind of project. I so wanted to share a pic... but it is right-click protected. Check it out HERE ($19,000)!

There are all kinds of international properties out there for all price brackets, including those who don't think they can afford it, one just needs to research thoroughly, bear in mind foreign taxes, renovation costs, and watch out for mold and water damage. Some websites for your perusal... Viviun, Holprop, & ToscanaHouses.

Meditation on the Beach

~Sunday Morning~

Living less than a mile from the beach, I actually don't
make it here as often as I should, but it makes it a special
treat to come down to the beach early in the morning,
beating the tourists, finding available parking,
and having the beach all to one's self.

Freshly combed sand, with MY footsteps to be the first to mess it up.

Feeling the soft grains of sand in my toes...

And welcoming the sunshine,

one must watch out for the little jellies though.

Yes, there is something magical about turning your back to a crowded city,
walking to the edge of land, embracing the wind, sea, and sky
and knowing that they are all yours, if even just for a little bit.

What a way to start a new week...

Hamlet

~ A Rural Settlement~

Word of the Week

Hamlet: A rural settlement too small to be considered a village.
(Once a hamlet was large enough to have a church, it was then considered a village.)

I discovered the definition of the word 'hamlet' this week upon
my internet searches for little European countryside investment properties.
I am just in love with this word...
and it's possibilities.

Have a Happy Weekend!!!

Travel Thursday

~Morocco Revisted~

In January, I blogged about a tour of Morocco with Cosmos for $880. After I posted that blog, my friend Lynne, whom I met on my European Sampler tour last year, emailed me to say that she had just signed up for this tour of Morocco before seeing my blog. I considered it may be fate, that I should attend with her, and it is with much regret that each month quickly went by and I opted to put vacation on hold. Today is the day this tour begins, and I am so envious that I am not accompanying Lynne, but anticipate seeing her photos, and hope she drinks lot of mint tea for me.

She will be taking an excursion to witness a sunset on the Sahara desert!

Good Eats Wednesday

Fried Green Tomatos

Cherry Tomato Plant

Beefsteak Tomato Plant

Our Little Container Garden

Condo living in South Florida, has it's advantages and disadvantages
in regards to maintaining a garden.
But I do what I can...
I bought my little tomato plants about six weeks ago,
and they were only a couple inches tall,
now, how these babies have flourished!
Which makes tomato season early for me.
My neighbor and I share this little community garden by our pool.

Growing in Our Garden:
cherry tomatos
beefsteak tomatos
chili peppers
basil
rosemary
&
one lime tree

One of my favorite Southern summer treats
 is Fried Green Tomatos...
though I tend not to deep fry
anything in my kitchen,
here is a simple and slightly healthier recipe.

Fried Green Tomatos
Serves: 2-4

1-2 green tomatos
1 egg
1/2 -3/4 cup of self-rising corn flour
3 tbsp vegetable, canola, or light olive oil

Slice tomatos about a 1/3 of an inch thick.
Dip each slice in beaten egg,
the dredge in cornmeal flour,
coating both sides.
Once oil is heated
on medium to medium-high in skillet or fry pan,
fit tomatoes in and cook to desired texture.
(I prefer them a little al dente, with the breading just beginning to crisp.)

Have you planted your summer garden?

Bon Appetit!
